0288: Split-bamboo fly rod, Varnished 6-strip bamboo flyrod. 9', 3/1 for #5 line. 6-1/4 oz. Nickel silver screw-lock reelseat with cedar wood barrel and knurled-edge sliding band. 6" reverse half-Wells cork grip. Bright nickel silver ferrules. Black, hardened steel snake and tip top guides, nickel-silver Agate stripper guide. Strap & ring hook keeper. Scarlet red wraps tipped Yellow. Custom made cloth bag with my label. A quality storage case is available seperately.
This high quality split bamboo fly rod is nicely refurbished with all new snake guides, tip top, wraps, and spar varnish. 'Genuine Tonkin Cane' and "9' HDH or E" labels. The butt ferrule is a 2F, suggesting that the action is for light trout. Appears to be an early higher end Montague model, perhaps a 'Flipline'. The butt joint has a mild swell at the grip. The nickel-silver ferrules are serrated and over-wrapped. There are a few decorative wraps just ahead of the strap and ring hook keeper. All joints are full length with no damage to the medium flamed cane. I'm guessing late 1940s since there are no intermediate windings or decorative medallian wraps. The serrated, rolled-welt, nickel-silver ferrules are all sound and fit well.
This rod has no maker name but has all the hallmarks of an above average split-bamboo fly rod. The reverse half-Wells grip is very good condition and the very-fine-thread screw-down reel seat with a cedar barrel insert is in very good condition. This is a very classic and sharp looking, moderately fast action rod that should handle a 6-DT or 5-WF line. In excellent refinished condition. $115
