0363: Wright & McGill, "Stream and Lake", model SL8642. Varnished 6-strip bamboo fly rod. 8-1/2', 3/2, 4-1/2 oz. for #4/5 line. Up-locking 'Granger' style nickel-silver reel seat with the correct Wright & McGill markings including the Apr 12, 1938 patent information. Very clean reversed half-Wells solid cork-rings grip. Bright nickel silver ferrules and a chromed nickel-silver stripper guide. Bronzed snake guides wrapped Red. No hook keeper, as issued.
The guides and ferrules are wrapped with Red silk thread suggesting a first year issue of the 'Stream and Lake'. Cost cutting nylon thread was used after 1947. The company and model name are fully rubber-stamped on the shaft although now very faint - another indicator of an early issue rod. Finished with hand applied UV resistant Spar varnish, the rod looks new. This lovely example should interest a 'Wright and McGill' collector, with all rehabilitation work professionally done. All joints are straight and full length. The rod comes in a non-original custom sewn, segmented sleeve with my label. A quality storage case may be available.
Add this fine, delicate in the hand, vintage 'Stream & Lake' to your 'Wright & McGill' collection or take it out to the stream (or lake) and enjoy fishing it. An almost new looking vintage rod that should do well with either a double-taper 5 or weight-forward 4 line. Excellent. $365
