0369: South Bend, #55-9,'Best-O-Luck' series varnished 6-strip bamboo fly rod. 9', 3/1, HCH or D, 6-3/8 oz. Screw-lock chromed reel seat. Very good 5-1/4", solid-cork half-Wells grip. Bright nickel silver, rolled-welt ferrules. Tool hardened steel snake guides, bright nickel stripper guide with Agatine insert, chrome tip-top. Red wraps sans tipping. No hook keeper, as issued. Original three-segment labeled bag, with readable 'South Bend' hang-tag, in fair condition. A quality storage case may be available.
Virtually original mid-to-late 1930s vintage 'South Bend', 55-9 fly rod from the 'Best-O-Luck' series. Very clean medium blonde colored 'Tonkin Cane' with all sections straight and correct length. No bamboo damage although some original dark glue lines are visible.(seams are not open) The original silk windings are still tight and quite servicable, two guides have been re-wraped with original silk. Well fitting ferrules, a very good grip and reel seat, no hook keeper. The 'South Bend' decal is bold and complete and the "55-9" rod lettering is dark and crisp.
This is considered an entry level 'Bass' fly rod. A 5/6-weight fly rod with a very pleasing, moderately fast action and good power. Being virtually original, this example could start a 'South Bend' collection, of course you could always take it out fishing. VG-Excellent. $90
