0410: 'Kingfisher', varnished 6-strip bamboo fly rod. 9', 3/1, 5 oz., 4 wt. Down-locking screw-hood over Tan plastic spacer. 5-1/2" half-Wells solid cork-ring grip. Rolled welt nickel ferrules. Chrome stripper guide, Black snake guides, and tip-top. Tan wraps sans tipping. Wound through strap & ring hook keeper. Custom sewn segmented cloth bag with label.
The rod is an entry level fly rod suitable for the novice fly-fisher who doesn't want to tie up a lot of money. Would be a lot of fun pitted against Bluegills and Sunfish. The rod has a hard plastic reel seat of a type used by Horrocks-Ibbotson. The bamboo itself gives few clues as to the manufacturer although many companies made rods for the 'Kingfisher' label. The medallion wrap patterns found ahead of the grip are 'Union-Hardware' style. The 'Kingfisher' brand was marketed by Edward K.Tryon of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
All joints are full length and the rod has a newly applied coat of Spar varnish. The 'Kingfisher' decal is approximately 60% complete. Fishable for the aspiring bamboo enthuiast with its moderately parabolic, slow action, yet also attractive for wall display. VG+, $90
A pre-owned vintage aluminum storage case is available for $15 with this rod purchase.
