0414: Horrocks-Ibbotson, 'Governor', Varnished 6 strip bamboo flyrod. 9', 3/1, 6oz, for #6 line. Down-locking reel seat with black plastic barrel, 5-3/4" reverse half-Wells, solid cork grip. The bright, rolled welt, ferrules are heavy walled nickel. Hardened steel snake line and stripper guides. No hook-keeper, as issued. Red wraps tipped Black. All joints full-length, and straight. Model name on shaft in White ink. Custom sewn, segmented and labeled cloth sleeve. A quality storage case is available.
The rod appears to be an early 1950s issue 'Governor' model with the tightly placed tipping bands, which may or may not be original. In addition, the flamed "Tonkin Cane" split-bamboo fly rod sports the rare and beautiful "Horrocks-Ibbotson Leaping Bass, Utica N.Y." decal which is 80% complete. Aside from the tipping, a mid-joint medallion and 'check' wrap on the butt section are the only non-essential embellishments. All joints are full length and straight and show no open seams or other distractions. The complete rod has new Spar varnish for years of service. The solid cork reverse half-Wells grip has been chemically cleaned and gives the rod a nice 'feel' in the hand.
This is a medium-fast action rod with lots of low-end power. This vintage Horrocks-Ibbotson 'Governor' looks almost new after professional refurbishing. Being a 'Governor' issued after the wrap pattern change eliminated wide-spaced tipping may make this interesting to the collector. Of course it is ready to head out to the stream or pond, too.
